How do I choose the right quantity for my gauge?

When creating a gauge, it is essential to carefully select a quantity, as this often contains a conversion factor that is used for calculating the total CO₂ emissions.

For a good overview of the available quantities, visit the overview page under Settings > Quantities. To expand a quantity, click the triangle in front of the quantity's name. All underlying quantities are now revealed. At the top of this page, you can also expand all quantities at once. Use CTRL + F to search through the list.

When you click on a quantity, you can see whether it contains a conversionfactor to money, energy, or CO2. You can always edit or override an existing conversion factor, or add one if it doesn't yet exist in the system.

Keep in mind that higher-level quantities often do not have a conversion factor! An example of this is the Exiobase categories under the quantity Money (EUR). The quantity Exiobase: Waste Processing and its underlying quantity Composting and biogas have no conversion, while more specific categories, like Paper waste for treatment: biogasification and land application, do.

When creating a gauge, it is important to always check whether the quantity can be further specified for greater accuracy. Take electricity as an example. Instead of choosing the general quantity Energy > Electricity > Purchased electricity, it is better to choose a more specific one, such as Energy > Electricity > Purchased electricity > Spain. Even better would be to further specify the type of electricity to green or grey. The quantity would then be: Energy > Electricity > Purchased electricity > Spain > Grey ES.
