Two-factor authentication (2FA)

A 2FA is much more secure than just a password. With this method, you grant permission to a specific computer to log in using both a code and the password. The request to enter a code is periodically repeated or prompted when you attempt to log in from a new device. Should your password unexpectedly become known to third parties, they still would not be able to log in, thanks to this method.

In SmartTrackers, administrators can require all their users to set up a 2FA.

Setting up

To use 2FA, go to user settings by clicking your name in the top right corner.

Then, click on the two-factor authentication option in the left menu. The following screen will appear.

There are several options available to set up your 2FA:

  1. Authenticator app: Download the (Google) Authenticator app on your phone. By opening this app, a unique code is displayed repeatedly. This app can also be used for other applications where two-factor authentication is supported
  2. SMS: If you choose this option, you will receive a code via SMS each time.
  3. FIDO2 security key: For this option, you need a security key. This is useful if you do not have a phone.
  4. One-time backup code: This is primarily intended as a recovery option if, for example, you no longer have access to your phone to log in. After each login with a backup code, a new backup code must be generated.
  5. At some companies, it is possible to log in using Entra ID. Entra ID is a Single Sign-on (SSO) provider. You then log in via an Entra ID platform of a specific company, similar to "Log in with Google."

We recommend using the Google Authenticator app, as it is generally the easiest to use.

Logging in with Visma Connect

Since last year, Visma Connect has been used for logging into SmartTrackers. How you set this up as a new user is explained in this article.

If you log in with Google but wish/have to enable 2FA in our app, you need to:

  1. Create a Visma Connect password via the 'Forgot Password' option.
  2. Enable 2FA in Visma Connect using the newly created password.
  3. From now on, simply log in via Google again, so you won't need that password anymore.
